Standing on a rocky bluff, overlooking surrounded on all but one side by swampland, Monea Castle was built by 1618 for Malcolm Hamilton. Probably the most interesting example of a ruined planter castles, which was burnt out in the 1641 Great Rebellion and again by the Jacobites in 1689.
